A handful of misfits are sent out on a suicidal mission to make First Contact with an alien race. In the near future, neurotechnoogy allows for radical restructuring both of damaged and healthy brains. Let me discuss the book's plot, characterization, its strong points, its weak points, and make a general comment about what is wrong with the whole worldview underpinning the book. There are some things in this book that I did not like for reasons personal to me but there were other things wrong with the book, violations of the most basic rules of story-telling, that should have disappointed even a reader who shared not one of my personal tastes.
It got a starred review from Publisher's weekly. It is perhaps the most disappointing ending of any science fiction book I have ever read. After a strong beginning, this book goes off the rails, crashes and burns, and the dazed reader, like passengers surviving a train wreck, numbly follows as the plot wanders out into the middle of a barren wasteland, where it dies.
